Editing Blog for music video

My group and I have started  editing our music video. We were very excited to do this because the filming process went well and we wanted to see how each scene looked together.  So we started the Editing process on iMovie. We used this software on our commercial so we were very familiar with its technology.  We started the editing process, by picking which clips we wanted in the video and which we wanted to discard completely. This was an easy process because most of the clips we had we hand picked when we were filming. So we had to go through each clip and pick which ones we wanted for each scene. Throughout this process we looked back at codes and conventions of our music genre to check if our clips went against them or with them. Mostly our clips went with the conventions rather than against but we also added our own spin to it. Just like our last commercial.
We then started to cut these clips.  We had to cut most of the clips short  to fit the time limit, but we also how to cut some parts of the clips that had extra unneeded footage. We also kept extra scenes we knew would be needed later in the project. This might’ve been the most difficult part of filming. This is because we had so many clips and we really wanted to use all of them but we had a maximum of 1 minute and 15 seconds. So in turn many clips had to be trimmed down or taken out completely. When we had all of our clips together it came to 1 minutes and 45 seconds and even thought that might not sound like a lot it was because we had a lot of creative desired shots. Once this was done we had to go through each clip and mute the audio. This was essential to the video because we didn’t want any background sound coming in the way of the music. We also had to trim the music down to the time limit and we had to pick where and when in the scenes the music would start.
The next process we went through were the transitions. We wanted each transition to be clean and make sense. But as we went through the music video we decided to stay with the original transitions because they were clean and went with the vibe of the video. While editing we also found that we used a lot more complex shots this project than last commercial. We used more shots like POVs and fade ins. We were very happy about this because it showed our progression as students and film makers. We then decided on some creative and stylistic choices. We wanted the video to make sense and not be over the top because that’s the whole vibe of the song and many others in this genre. So while we did make some different choices when it came to editing like adding a freeze frame we still stuck with the songs initial vibe and mood. But overall we enjoyed the editing process and found ourselves very happy with the finished product!

Music Video filming

This weekend my group and I filmed  this weekend for our music video for the song Location by Khalid. My group and I met up at  my group-mate Nadia‘s house. We did this so that we could shot some of the scenes we wanted to in the car and everyone would be together for those scenes.  So her mom drove us to the beach and we filmed on the way.  Once we got to the beach, we had her mom drop us off at the most scenic location. We wanted to film the scenes we had in mind on the beach first, so we chose the best area to enter the beach based on lighting and what was around that location.  We were mostly specific on this because we didn’t want anything in the shot that we didn’t plan to be in the shot, like extra buildings or too many people. So we found an entrance that net our needs and got out of the car. We had to have her mom wait a little because we had a scene to film of someone stepping out of the car. Once we finished we took our things and chose a spot to film our first beach scenes.
Shooting on the beach wasn’t too difficult, But we did face some difficulties. The night before I checked the weather and saw that it would be sunny so my group and I knew that we wouldn’t have to worry about weather. But the wind was very crazy and sand was blowing everywhere so we had to wait out the really bad gusts and avoid the sand. Other than that we didn’t really face any other difficulties. My main job was to act in the music video. I played the main character in the scenes while my group mates played my friends. So I mainly had to work and discuss with everyone what the next scenes were and act accordingly. I was very happy doing this and my group and I worked really well on how the scenes were shot and what to do in them. We had a picture of our storyboard which was really helpful so that we could remember our initial ideas for a scene and either do the same thing or something different. But we mainly stuck to our initial ideas and kinda cane up with perfected versions.
We then shot our boardwalk scenes. Shooting these scenes were the most difficult, this was because at the time we were filming the beach was very crowded and we didn’t want too many extras in our shots. We also wanted to avoid any problems with civilians because most people don’t want to be filmed and require consent. So making sure that not too many people were in our shots on a busy boardwalk was quite difficult. But we found a way around this by spacing out our scenes or going to more quiet sidewalks. During this time I searched for clear spots and acted in each scene. I wouldn’t say that I directed the music video because my group and I all put in ideas and input. But my main job was to deliver a believable and accurate performance. I didn’t have difficulty with this because I have acted before and my group mates gave me clear and concise notes. But filming overall was smooth and went very well, and my group and I are very happy with the progress.
